In December, 25 Cleveland-area figure skaters and special guests braved the cold temperatures to perform in a special show at the Cleveland Foundation Skating Rink in Public Square. The 3rd annual Sk8 to Elimin8 Cleveland Celebration Ice Show, hosted by the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, raised more than $19,000 for a cancer research project underway at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute.
The show featured special performances by the nationally ranked ice dancers, Eva Pate and Logan Bye, as well as 2022 Olympian Mariah Bell and a performance by the American Ice Theatre Cleveland professional company. Some of the Cleveland-area’s top skaters, Erika Gerstenslager, Shaelyn Logue and Kimito Miyagawa also performed.
The fundraising campaign, made possible by the local skaters and Scott CARES, raised money for a research project on a cancer treatment called STING therapy. STING therapy activates the immune system but can harm key cancer-fighting cells called T cells, weakening the immune response. Cleveland Clinic researchers are working to find ways to block this harmful effect to make STING therapy more effective against cancer.
Since 2014, the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation has strived to change the future of cancer by funding advanced, innovative research that treats the cancer while sparing the patient. The Scott CARES Foundation supports scientists and research at National Cancer Institute-accredited institutions and healthcare organizations across the nation, like Cleveland Clinic.
