Closing the Treatment Gap for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Patients

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is widely recognized for its aggressive nature. When diagnosed at advanced stages, it poses a significant challenge to treat. Despite recent advancements in research leading to more effective treatments, a vast number of patients are still not benefiting from these developments.

One underlying reason is that patients exhibit various immune determinants. While many recent clinical studies have concentrated on a certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type, there is a pressing need for broader research to offer treatment options for all patients diagnosed with TNBC. This gap in research has inspired C. Marcela Diaz-Montero, PhD, to explore T-cell receptor therapy, aiming to benefit those patients who have been previously understudied and are diagnosed at advanced stages.

“A lot of these cell therapies are specific to your HLA type, and there are a whole lot of patients who do not have those immune determinants,” says Dr. Diaz-Montero. “So I hope to understand the immune determinants for patients who are affected the most so they can have access to effective cell therapy treatments.”

Having witnessed the effects of cancer within her own family, Dr. Diaz-Montero deeply understands and appreciates the VeloSano mission and the need to find more cures. Her commitment to this cause drives her research and fuels her determination to make a difference.

“VeloSano grants are so instrumental in allowing us to do these high-risk projects and generate that data or that first publication or hire that trainee that can push it forward,” says Dr. Diaz-Montero. “It’s just so crucial.”

Her dedication extends beyond the laboratory. Dr. Diaz-Montero has been a loyal Bike to Cure rider since day one. Her personal experiences with cancer in her family have only strengthened her resolve to contribute to the VeloSano mission, making each ride a testament to her unwavering commitment to finding a cure.

“There is so much that can be done, and there is such an amazing amount of people that are motivated to make a difference,” says Dr. Diaz-Montero. “It’s what keeps me going. It’s more important than ever to donate and to keep these types of programs alive.”
